Connection to Society
This poem does a great job capturing the beauty of these creatures. Hoffman does an excellent job creating a picture for the reader that also describes some of the characteristics of fireflies. The fact that they appear when the night is still and light up the sky can really be a good description for someone who has never seen these creatures before. We briefly talked about these animals and the properties of their bio-luminescence in class one week. The quote from the poem, "They dance their magic waltz of light, while the night is still," is a great personification that gives these beetles human traits in a creative manner. There is a mystical feel that the poem gives fireflies and the reader is left appreciating the beauty of these animals throughout this publication. This is basically the gist of the class. To learn about animals and be fascinated by them. And I think this poem does an excellent job at accomplishing this.
