The Insect
Fireflies are actually beetles and are nocturnal members of the family Lampyridae. Most fireflies have wings which distinguishes them from other luminescent insects of the same family that are known as glowworms. There are around two thousand firefly species. These insects live in warm environments as well as temperate regions. These insects also love moisture and are often seen on summer evenings. They can be found all over the world, including continents like South and North America as well as Asia. Fireflies have light organs that are located under their abdomens. the insects take in oxygen and combine it with a substance called luciferin to produce light with almost no heat. These insects have patterns of light that are unique to their species. Each blinking pattern is an optical signal that helps them find potential mates. Scientists are still unsure of how these insects choose their patterns.
